Guide for Editors

The Global Journal of Dental Specialty (GJDS) is committed to maintaining the highest standards of editorial quality, scientific integrity, and ethical publishing. Editors play a vital role in ensuring that all submitted manuscripts are evaluated fairly, confidentially, and objectively. Editors are expected to perform their responsibilities in accordance with the recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), and internationally recognized best practices in scholarly publishing.

Editorial Responsibilities

Editors are responsible for managing the editorial process from manuscript submission to the final publication decision. Editorial decisions should be based solely on the scientific merit, originality, methodological quality, ethical compliance, and relevance of the manuscript to the journal's scope.

Editors are expected to:

  • Conduct an initial editorial assessment of submitted manuscripts.

  • Select qualified and independent peer reviewers.

  • Monitor the peer-review process to ensure fairness and timeliness.

  • Evaluate reviewers' comments objectively.

  • Make editorial decisions based on scientific quality and ethical standards.

Maintaining Editorial Integrity

Editors must ensure that every manuscript is handled impartially without discrimination based on nationality, gender, ethnicity, religion, institutional affiliation, or political beliefs. Commercial interests, sponsorship, or personal relationships must never influence editorial decisions.

Editors should:

  • Maintain editorial independence.

  • Apply journal policies consistently.

  • Promote transparency throughout the review process.

  • Ensure equal treatment of all authors.

Confidentiality

Editors must treat all submitted manuscripts and related correspondence as confidential documents. Unpublished information must not be shared with unauthorized individuals or used for personal, academic, or commercial advantage.

Editors should maintain confidentiality regarding:

  • Submitted manuscripts.

  • Reviewer identities and reports.

  • Editorial discussions and decisions.

  • Author correspondence and unpublished data.

Peer Review Management

Editors are responsible for selecting reviewers with appropriate expertise and ensuring an unbiased double-blind peer-review process. They should monitor reviewer performance and ensure reviews are constructive, professional, and completed within the specified timeframe.

Editors should:

  • Avoid selecting reviewers with conflicts of interest.

  • Ensure objective and evidence-based reviews.

  • Request additional reviews where necessary.

  • Resolve conflicting reviewer recommendations fairly.

Publication Ethics

Editors are responsible for safeguarding research integrity and identifying potential ethical concerns during the editorial process. Suspected cases of plagiarism, duplicate publication, data fabrication, image manipulation, authorship disputes, or unethical research must be investigated according to COPE guidance.

Editors should:

  • Verify ethical approvals where applicable.

  • Ensure plagiarism screening has been completed.

  • Address publication misconduct promptly.

  • Follow COPE Flowcharts when investigating ethical concerns.

Conflicts of Interest

Editors must disclose any actual or potential conflicts of interest related to a manuscript. Where a conflict exists, the editor must withdraw from handling the manuscript, and responsibility should be assigned to another qualified editor.

Editorial Decision-Making

Editorial decisions should be based solely on:

  • Scientific quality.

  • Originality and significance.

  • Methodological rigor.

  • Ethical compliance.

  • Reviewer recommendations.

  • Relevance to the journal's scope.

The Editor-in-Chief has the final authority regarding acceptance, revision, or rejection of manuscripts.

Quality Assurance

Editors should ensure that accepted manuscripts undergo all necessary production processes before publication, including:

  • Copyediting.

  • Language editing.

  • Reference verification.

  • Proofreading.

  • Metadata validation.

  • DOI assignment.

  • Final editorial approval.

Continuous Professional Development

Editors are encouraged to remain informed about developments in publication ethics, editorial best practices, and scholarly publishing standards. The Editorial Board periodically reviews editorial policies to ensure compliance with COPE, ICMJE, and international indexing requirements.

The Global Journal of Dental Specialty (GJDS) expects all editors to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, confidentiality, fairness, and academic integrity. Through responsible editorial management and ethical decision-making, editors contribute to the publication of high-quality, trustworthy, and impactful research that advances dental science and oral healthcare worldwide.
